Fall and Winter Pest Control
Tips for Your Home
Many people will tell you that in the fall and winter, bugs are looking to come inside your home. Cold weather causes bugs to look for warm areas inside houses to escape the elements of Mother Nature. While I do know for a fact that bugs prefer warm moist areas, I don’t think that I have ever known an insect to knock on doors looking for shelter. Pests in the fall and winter enter homes just the same way as they do in spring and summer, through cracks and crevices, windows, doors, and other places. However, we do need to make sure that our homes are protected from pests, even in the fall and winter.
We have compiled a list of checkpoints that you can use to make sure that pests have a more difficult time entering your home.
1. Check windows and doors for gaps and problems with weather-stripping. Not only will this help you save on your energy costs, but it will deter insects from entering your home.
2. Keep pine straw and mulch levels to a minimum. The thicker the levels of mulching materials give insects not only shelter, but a good food source.
3. If you use firewood, store it on a shelf or covered area, up off the ground. Insects love to hitch a ride into your home under the bark in firewood. If you have been noticing large roaches inside your home, it could be because they came in with the firewood.
4. Cut back bushes and trees from the foundation of your house. Fall and winter is a great time to do some maintenance to your landscaping. If you cut down on leaf clutter and limbs that are overhanging your house, it will help keep the bugs away.
